A life less ordinary

Date: 20 Apr 2026

Bupa Longwood residents Ayron and Lynette enjoy retirement village life, and financial security.

At just 73 and 71 years of age, Bupa residents Ayron and Lynette are proof that life in a retirement village doesn’t mean slowing down. The couple made the move to Bupa Longwood at the beginning of 2026, with Ayron continuing his work as a school bus driver.

“I’ve been driving a school bus for the last ten years – it gets me out of bed in the mornings!” says Ayron. “I enjoy the driving, and [the chance to] meet the kids. The fact that I still have my Heavy Traffic License to do this job gives me a sense of pride.”

“I drive from Riverton to Winton twice a day, do a morning and afternoon school run five days a week, plus extra charter work, and sometimes fuelling buses too – I have a problem of not being able to say no!” laughs Ayron.

Married for 52 years, the couple chose Bupa Longwood for several reasons, including its picturesque location, the price of the villa, and its quality and size compared to those in other villages. In addition, the fact they were able to bring their little dog, and 18-year-old Burmese cat with them, was a big part of their decision, as well as the peace of mind of knowing the village had a care home on site.

Last but not least says Ayron, was the welcoming nature of Village Coordinator Angela. “I cannot stress enough how she makes this place work and makes us feel,” says Ayron. “She’s the icing on the cake – and the cherries!”

“The village has a good vibe, and as you get to know everyone the atmosphere becomes even more relaxing – and the village team here really help facilitate this,” says Lynette.

Originally based in Queenstown, the couple owned a taxi business, with Ayron working in the business and Lynette running her own successful venture making candles. After 22 years in Queenstown, the couple moved to Winton, where they lived for 10 years before making the decision to move to Bupa Longwood.

The couple have two children, and two grandchildren. Their granddaughter often comes to stay, with the couple’s study used as a bedroom for her when she visits. This additional space was another reason Ayron and Lynette chose their particular villa, with its overall layout, low maintenance design and garage ticking all the boxes.

The couple enjoy going for walks and gardening, and Ayron has set up a model railway in their garage. With his busy driving schedule Ayron doesn’t have a lot of spare time, but he and Lynette still make the village morning tea every Tuesday, and join the weekly happy hour and occasional weekend activity.

Both Lynette and Ayron say the relaxed lifestyle at Bupa Longwood has benefitted their overall wellbeing. “Being part of the Riverton country atmosphere and the activities on offer here at the village – we’re enjoying what Bupa has to offer now, and in the future!”
