Bupa short stay services

Need short term or respite care? Discover our flexible care options.

Short stay services

At Bupa, our short stay services help you take a break and plan activities such as a holiday, with the knowledge and reassurance that the person in your care will be looked after. Sometimes referred to as respite care, these short stays can provide relief for family carers, support during recovery from illness or surgery, or simply a safe and welcoming environment for a short-term change.

Whether you need a few days to several weeks, our care homes across New Zealand are here to help with professional, compassionate support.

Planning for short stay services (respite care) with Bupa

It is best to try and plan and book short stay services as far in advance as possible, to allow us to ensure we have a space available for the person in your care.

To book short stay services, you can:

  • Contact our team directly
  • Speak to your GP or Needs Assessment Service Coordinator (NASC)
  • Arrange private respite care if you're not eligible for government funding

Funding may be available for eligible individuals. You can find out more through your local NASC.

Involving your doctor

The person in your care will need to have seen their doctor within the past three months, as their own doctor will continue to care for them during their short stay with us. To support our knowledge of relevant medical information about the person in your care, their doctor will need to complete a short stay admission booklet, which will be given to you by the care home team prior to admission.

You will need to be aware of, and organise, the following:

  • Please ensure a medication list has been supplied by their doctor.
  • Our team will give the person in your care their medication at the usual times.
  • If they wish to manage their own medication, the person in your care will need a note from their doctor confirming they are able to do this.
  • For any acute or after-hours medical assessments, we may need to contact one of our on-call doctors if their doctor is unavailable.
