Bupa New Zealand announces new Managing Director

Date: 27 Oct 2026

Bupa New Zealand has announced the appointment of Josh Byers as Managing Director, succeeding Pedro Sánchez, who will retire at the end of 2026 after 20 years with Bupa.

Josh will take up the role from 1 January 2027, following three years in which Pedro has led Bupa New Zealand through significant transformation and change, strengthening the business’s performance, market position and culture, and building a strong platform for future growth.

Pedro joined Sanitas Mayores, Bupa’s Spanish aged care business, as Operations Director in 2006 and became General Manager in 2021. During his 17 years with the business, he helped drive significant growth while championing innovation, person-centred care and positive change in dementia care communities.

He moved to New Zealand in 2024 to lead Bupa’s New Zealand business.

Bupa APAC CEO Nick Stone thanked Pedro for his contribution to Bupa over the past two decades.

“Pedro has made a remarkable contribution to Bupa over 20 years, first in Spain and more recently here in New Zealand,” Mr Stone said.

“Over the past three years, he has led the New Zealand business through an important period of transformation, leaving it in a strong position for the future.

“On behalf of our Board and team, I want to thank Pedro for his leadership and commitment. He should be incredibly proud of the legacy he leaves.”

Josh has played a key role in Bupa New Zealand’s transformation agenda, with a strong focus on customers, innovation and strengthening the organisation’s technological capability. This has included the launch of Blua.

Mr Stone said Josh’s appointment provided continuity while bringing the leadership and experience needed for Bupa New Zealand’s next phase.

“Josh is a proven leader who brings deep knowledge of our New Zealand business, together with a strong focus on our customers and people.

“He has been closely involved in the transformation of the business and is well placed to build on the strong foundations Pedro and the New Zealand team have established.”

Josh said he was looking forward to leading Bupa New Zealand and continuing the progress made under Pedro’s leadership.

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to lead Bupa New Zealand,” Josh said.

“We have a great team and a clear focus on delivering high-quality care and services for our residents and customers. I’m looking forward to building on the progress we’ve made and continuing to strengthen Bupa for the future.”

Pedro said it had been a privilege to finish his Bupa career in New Zealand.

“After 20 years with Bupa, I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, both in Spain and during my time in New Zealand.

“The past three years have been a significant period for Bupa New Zealand, and I’m proud of the way our people have embraced change while continuing to focus on our residents and customers.

“I know Josh and the team will continue to build on that work, and I wish them every success.”
