New friendship helps resident settle in

Date: 22 Jul 2021

When Angela moved into her Bupa Northhaven Retirement Village apartment late last year, she only vaguely knew a couple of the residents.

It didn’t take long though for Angela to strike up a conversation in the library area with fellow resident Christine.

Angela says they both have maintenance free ground floor apartments and their own little gardens that are maintained with the assistance of the village gardener.

“We just found that we instantly clicked and that’s always great when you move in somewhere new.”

After a career as a secretary and living happily in Whangarei for five years, Angela sadly lost her husband in 2020. The decision was made to move into the Red Beach village that is close to her grown children and their families.

Angela and Christine now meet for coffee every Monday morning in the village lounge and have found common ground in both being technology savvy. Interests and friends outside the village still continue for Angela, such as her local craft group that she regularly attends and enjoys.

The small community of village residents at Bupa Northhaven Retirement Village is a definite plus for Angela as she likes that everyone knows each other.

“Even though you have your own apartment, there’s a certain feeling of security with other people close by. I really love it.”
