Moving day checklist

Moving into a care home is a big step. Whether you’re making the move yourself or supporting a family member or friend, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions – from relief, to uncertainty, even sadness. That’s okay. Adjustment takes time, not just for new residents, but for their family too.

Your Bupa care home move-in checklist

Clothing and personal items

  • Everyday clothing (washable, easy to wear)
  • Nightwear and dressing gown
  • Slippers, socks, and underwear
  • Warm coat or jacket
  • Personal touches (photos, cushions, keepsakes)
  • Small furniture items, if space allows (chair, lamp, bookshelf)

Toiletries and personal care

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
  • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash
  • Hairbrush, comb, and hair products
  • Skincare products (moisturiser, sunscreen)
  • Razor, nail clippers, deodorant
  • Bathrobe

Medication and health support

  • Mobility aids (walker, wheelchair)
  • Hearing aids, glasses, dentures

Electrical appliances and entertainment

  • TV (if needed), radio, or other small appliances*
  • Chargers for phone, tablet, or other devices*
  • Books, puzzles, or hobbies to enjoy in your room

*These will be tested by the care home team for safety reasons.

First day essentials bag

Packed separately so you have essential items handy for the first 24-48 hours without having to unpack completely.

  • Change of clothes and nightwear
  • Toiletries
  • Phone and charger
  • Snacks or comfort items
