Embracing a life well lived at Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village

For Bupa Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village residents Robin and his wife Karen, the decision to make the move to retirement village living was fuelled by their desire for security, little or no home and garden maintenance, and the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, should they wish.

“We wanted to make the move to a retirement village before we were no longer able to carry on maintaining our home and property,” says Robin. With several retirement villages in the local area to choose from, Robin says the couple opted for Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village based on its smaller size, attractive layout and great proximity to local facilities. “We felt Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village had a very quiet, relaxing atmosphere,” he says, adding the couple felt the village was well laid out, with landscaped grounds and a care home on site.

No strangers to Whangārei itself, Robin and Karen spent most of their younger married and working life in the area, and after a period of time spent living in Hamilton decided to make the move north back to where it all began.  “Because we’ve lived in the area we have family here, including children and grandchildren, who we are able to visit and who also come to see us here,” says Robin, noting many of his fellow village residents chose Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village to remain close to family.

The beautiful beaches of Northland were also a drawcard, as well as the plethora of activities on offer at the village, which Robin is quick to list off with enthusiasm. “The communal vege garden, residents’ workshop, community centre, putting green and ukelele group to name a few!” he laughs. As the group tutor, Robin leads the ukelele class every Wednesday, which is made up of Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village residents who come together to learn and socialise over a shared love of music.

Clearly content with retirement village life, Robin says if he were to give advice to others thinking about making the move to retirement village living, he’d suggest ticking all the boxes beforehand, and to “make sure you’re comfortable living within a close-knit community.” And with that, he’s back to his ukelele group. No such thing as “down tools” around here!
