Attention to detail is key with needlework, and Bupa Wattle Downs Retirement Village displayed many hours of that concentration and detail with its needlework exhibition.

Lynne Westbrooke, village manager loves to talk about needlework with her residents. She’s been doing the decorative craft herself since she was a teenager and says the 100 pieces on display came from a handful of residents who enjoy it too.

“My aunt taught me and it’s been a lifelong passion of mine. Some of the pieces are just so creative and brilliant.”

The Auckland retirement village has a number of completed colourful needlework pieces on the walls of the Dining Room and public areas donated by past and present residents.

The exhibition also included pieces from an embroidery club in East Auckland. Lynne says when a resident puts thread to needle, the process of finishing needlework can be quite fast.

“I have one resident who can complete an intricate needlework in just a couple of months. It's very impressive.”
