“I didn't know what to expect as this was my first event of this kind at Cedar Manor. I was amazed. It was all very well put together, and I enjoyed the evening enormously,” says resident Rod Mills.

Dating back to the 1920’s, Cedar Manor‘s iconic building and its surrounding garden are the perfect setting for a High Tea and Hats Garden Party. The event is a social occasion, where residents can dress-up and enjoy a special evening.

“It is extra fun for the residents as they create eye-catching hats at craft time; especially for the occasion” says Finance and Office Administrator Jane Verry, the main organiser of this year’s event.

Staff and volunteers served a delicious buffet to residents in the Craig Wing and dining room. The party was held in the evening so most family members could attend and spend precious time with the person they care for in a unique way.

It doesn’t take long to understand why these functions are so popular. After dinner the local band Backporch started playing and many residents danced.

“When the band started playing, some of our more able residents were straight up on their feet. One resident practically danced all night,” says Jane.

When Backporch finished playing the guests enjoyed watching the fabulous dancers Kirsten and Daniel swirl around the dance floor. They wowed everyone with two sets of three dances and later stayed on to mingle with the residents. Kirsten and Daniel are international award-winning dancers, by day they tend their farm in Katikati. This was the third time they have danced for the residents at Cedar Manor. They do this on a voluntary basis because they enjoy sharing their dance with residents.

Later in the evening, there was a raffle and a guess the celebrity competition (it was Frank Sinatra!). There was also a contest for the night's fanciest hat, and Enid Wordsworth was crowned the winner with her beautiful garden themed hat.

“The evening was very special. It was wonderful to see the smiles on our resident's faces as they watched the dancers perform and it was great to arrange another event where the Cedar Manor team came together to create something magical,” says Jane.
