Education and Training

We will offer you professional development opportunities.    

Education for Registered Nurses is tailored to suit the individual, taking into account past experiences.

We have a number of Bupa designed programmes available to you. Our in-house annual education plan is delivered in work time. This includes access to online education learning opportunities and funding of compulsory training.

We hold an Annual Forum for our Registered Nurses that we run off-site and pay for our nurses to attend.

Professional Development Recognition Programme (PDRP)

In 2007 Bupa began the journey to develop a tailor made PDRP for nurses working in aged residential care. We received collaborative support from a number of DHBs, primarily CDHB and HVDHB.  The Bupa programme was approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) in September 2012, and is revalidated every 5 years thereafter by NCNZ

Our current programme is reviewed annually to ensure that it meets the National Framework and Evidential Requirements. This allows our programme to be transferrable across DHB’s and ensures that other programmes can be transferred to Bupa.

Our assessors are a team of senior nurses who have extensive nursing experience, some of whom are certified NCNZ assessors. They are committed to ensuring that nurses receive the help and support they require to meet the NCNZ competencies and to make these part of their daily practice.


  • It is a record of your professional growth and development, and is a reflection on the practice, skills and knowledge you use in clinical practice.
  • To show your contribution to quality resident health outcomes
  • To gain exemption from NCNZ recertification audit
  • To receive financial rewards (specific levels)

While it is not compulsory at Bupa, Clinical Managers who complete the Clinical Leadership Programme are required to submit a portfolio after completing the programme

We encourage nurses to showcase their professional expertise and enhance their professional development by completing PDRP.

New Employees
  • During the recruitment process nurses will indicate their current level on a NCNZ PDRP accredited programme.  The Recruitment Manager will inform the PDRP Coordinator if the applicant is successful and accepts a position with Bupa.
  • On providing evidence from their previous employer, nurses will be employed on the same level that they were on at their previous DHB, and will have a period of 12 months in which to prepare and submit a new portfolio at the current practice level.

Looking after you

Each year we run a prize draw known as “Holiday of a Lifetime”. All employees go into the draw to win one of seven holiday vouchers (1 x NZ$10,000, 2 x NZ$5,000, 4 x NZ$2500).

At Bupa, we care about your health and wellbeing as well as that of our residents and clients. Our employee wellness programme is known as Smile.

We want to make your move to New Zealand an easy one.  Bupa is an accredited employer with Immigration New Zealand. This means we can support your “Work to Residence” visa. This is great news if you reside outside of New Zealand and want to make our beautiful shores your home.   

Under the Work to Residence visa, you will be granted a visa for 30 months. After working for 24 months, you will automatically be eligible to apply for your residency visa. You do not need to worry about gaining enough points to lodge your Expression of Interest with Immigration New Zealand.
