New Zealand Nursing Registration requirements :

Registered Nurses who have gained their registration in countries other than New Zealand need to apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand before being able to practice here.

The Nursing Council of New Zealand is the statutory authority governing the practice of nurses and midwives in New Zealand. It sets and monitors nursing standards, in the interests of public safety.

The length of time it takes the Nursing Council to process your application for registration varies greatly, depending on how straightforward it is for the council to assess your application against the necessary criteria. However, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.

Principle considerations for registrations are:

  • You have undertaken a nursing programme that is similar in all specified content and length to the equivalent programme in New Zealand, and you are able to meet the competencies for registration.

  • You have practised as a Nurse within the past five years.

  • If English is not your first language: you have supplied the Nursing Council with evidence, obtained within the past two years, of your ability to speak and write in the English language. Tests that are recognised by the Nursing Council are CGNFS, IELTS, OET, or part of a competency programme.

  • If you do not meet the requirement for nursing registration, you may be required to undertake further education and work experience within a New Zealand education institution. This process is overseen by the Department of Nursing.
